Lionell Tailbrush was brought to life for a WNF (WWF) Ranger flyer. Perhaps he will someday star in his own adventures.. Let's paint the jungle orange!

Miss Orphelia Stritch in front of the estate
This portret of Miss O. Stritch is my next gouache experiment, and I feel this technique is really starting to grow on me. A style is born! :-)

Sittin' Pretty Portrets
In preparation of a series of little gouache canvasses, I made these 'posh portret'-sketches. It's great fun to create the costumes and hats, and I get a lot of inspiration from my old family photobook, full of 19th and 20th century 'sittin' pretty' pictures.

Owl Play
These little owls I drew for a flyer for a WNF Ranger event (youth department of Dutch World Wildlife Fund). I wanted to try and make them in the existing 'bird-style' and realized I just had to 'turn the egg' to create an owl-base. This calls for more bird-body-studies!

An Ant-A-Flu is good for you!
Last week I had the flu and had to stay at home for a while. Not very pleasant in itself, but the idea for this 'health-hero' made out of Anta Flu cough candies put a smile back on my face :-)

A bookmark for my love
For our 4th Anniversary, I wanted to make a card for my love, but while designing it, the format slowly turned into that of a bookmark. I enjoyed making this so much, that I decided it would be fun to make some more designs for bookmarks. Soon to be seen here too...

Happy New Year!
This is the design for our New Year greeting to everyone.
When I'm awake at night, words and images play around in my head and form odd combinations. To bad, they mostly work in one language only... So this is a Dutch one, a combination of Happy New Year (Gelukkig Nieuwjaar) and aardvark (aardvarken).
And I'm planning to make many more of these 'Paper Ani-mates' :-)

And next in line: a newborn baby postcard, or when you just want to ask your dear friend to baby-sit for a day...

Birdwatching by night
What better way to test my new black-paper sketchbook and white pen than with making a night scenery for my favourite birds!

Wasbeer
Second in the series 'expressions involving animals' is 'Wasbeer', the Dutch name for a raccoon, meaning 'washing bear'. The use of wallpaper still gives me a lot of inspiration, only this time I glued the wallpaper dishes to a painted canvas. The raccoon is also a cut-out, made with paint and pastels.

A rainy Sunday, being happy in the studio
This Sunday is all about inspiration and being in a terrific studio-mood.
To start with, I'm putting together two animals from the 'Magical Menagerie by Junzo Terada: 20 Punch-Out Animals for Play and Display'. Such lovely prints, how easy can getting inspired be!
Next:
getting some 'nature' inspiration, simply from the encyclopedia, and
admiring the amazing prints in Angie Lewin's 'Plants and places', Marnie
Fogg's '1950s fashion prints' en V&A's 'Fifties furnishing
fabrics'.
And now, I'm ready for some sketching!

De Bokkenpruik
This is an experiment with wallpaper samples. 'De bokkenpruik op hebben' is a Dutch expression, used when someone is in a bad mood. Literally, it means wearing a goat as a wig. I'd like to make a series of cards, using all kinds of expressions that involve animals.

A relaxing afternoon
Suddenly, you realise something: you have an fantastic studio in your own house, and where are you? Anywhere but in that great room! There's always some chore or DIY-job to do (like redecorating your entire home..), but enough is enough! Today, I successfully ignored the rest of the house and spent a wonderful, relaxed afternoon in my studio, doodling with pencils, markers, paint and pastels. And then, of course, you don't want to stop, but I'm just going to spend more time there. I haven't been DIY-ing so hard on that studio to not be using it, have I..? :-)

Hedgehog
Finally, I took the time to do some sketching on the train to work. This idea had been lurking around in my head for quite some time. Maybe it's going to be part of a series...

Baby gift Christopher | Kraamcadeau Christopher
Inspired by those beautiful wooden letter blocks, I made this illustration as a baby gift for friends. Starting with an extensive fabrics-research, followed by enthusiastic cutting and pasting of letters and blocks, and completing it all with a little bird-drawing party.

cccollection - Nursery art | Kinderkamerkunst
Last winter, I thought to myself: how amazing would it be if I could make anything I'd like and that, let's say, someone would suddenly be standing at my doorstep and tell me: 'That is really great stuff, I'd like to buy it!'
And now? Now, Claudia from cccollection, a webshop for nursery art, stumbled upon my blog en is now selling some of my illustrations. Absolutey amazing how things can turn out. Ideas are fluttering through my mind and tingling through my fingers. Inspiration is everywhere in this springtime nature.
Afgelopen winter bedacht ik me hoe geweldig

Owlin' At The Moon
While I was illustrating this owl for a WWF flyer, I heard Howlin' Wolf's music. And after some subconscious 'simmering', these two things merged into a new version of the illustration: 'Owlin' At The Moon'.
